In 1993, Abney was designated at Hackney’s first local nature reserve, reflecting the importance of the site’s ecology, as a central London woodland, as a place where the fallen trees allow fungi to flourish and one where invertebrates can find a home. 33 years later, with Hackney Council declaring a climate emergency in 2019, the ecology of the site is even more important, and even more under threat.
